TANZANIA

Bishop John and his wife Anne

are members of our church family.

Bishop John is an assistant Bishop

in the Diocese of Chester having

retired in 2007 from being Bishop of

Kiteto in Tanzania. However John and

his wife Anne are still very much involved

in the African Church and John visits regularly

as well as being in touch most days by e-mail.

St John’s is actively involved in helping

with this work through a variety of ways

not least in praying for the work there. In 2006

two of our members Alex and Judith Calvert

visited Kiteto..

Kiteto covers an area 180 x 80 miles called

the Masai steppe. About half the people are

nomadic Masai herding cattle and goats.

The other half are a mixture of tribes whose

main crop is maize. 2005-6 were years of famine after a failure of the rains but 2007 saw a good harvest and plenty of grass for the animals.

The diocese has around 20,000 worshippers each Sunday in over 150 churches. A new church is being opened roughly every fortnight. This means that much of the diocesan resources have to be put into training pastors and other church helpers. There are over 200 groups of new Christians working through a four year course.

Training takes place mainly at Kiteto Christian College that has 120 residential places and can expand to over 200 using tents. At KCC there is also a Trade school and an Infant and primary school. The assembly hall doubles up as the Cathedral that will hold up to 2,000 worshippers.

The diocese is very much involved in helping the whole community through 150 Infant schools, Literacy classes and Teacher training. The 2007-8 the project is to build a hospital and bring vastly improved health facilities, especially eye treatment to this large area.
